Zhangjiajie National Forest Park became the first national forest park in China in 1982, carved from 4,810 hectares of sandstone karst in Hunan Province.
The quartzite pillars that define the park—more than 3,000 of them—rise to 200 metres, shaped by 380 million years of tectonic uplift and erosion along ancient fault lines. In 1992, the park joined the wider Wulingyuan Scenic Area on the UNESCO World Heritage list, recognized for geology that has no parallel elsewhere on Earth.
The vertical columns became globally recognizable after 2009, when director James Cameron used photographs of the Southern Sky Column as the visual foundation for the floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar. The pillar was formally renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain the following year, and visitor numbers doubled within twelve months. Yet the formations themselves predate any film mythology: geologists trace their structure to the Devonian period, when this region lay beneath a shallow sea. The sandstone was later lifted, fractured, and worn into the forest of stone that now defines the park's silhouette.
A Zhangjiajie National Forest Park day tour typically begins along Golden Whip Stream, a seven-kilometre canyon walk that threads between pillar bases, crossing wooden bridges over water shallow enough to reflect the rock faces. The Bailong Elevator, installed in 2002 and controversial for its scale, lifts visitors 326 metres up the face of a cliff in under two minutes, depositing them onto the Yuanjiajie plateau where the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint sits. From there, trails extend across stone bridges and through tunnels carved into the rock, linking platforms that overlook valleys filled with morning mist.
Tianzi Mountain, the northern section of the park, can be reached by cable car from Yuanjiajie or accessed separately via the eastern entrance. The summit plateau offers views across a sea of peaks, and the descent to Ten-Mile Gallery—a corridor of rock spires named for their resemblance to painted scrolls—completes a loop that takes most visitors between six and eight hours. The park remains open year-round, but visibility fluctuates: summer fog obscures the pillars for days at a time, while winter ice closes higher trails intermittently.
